Narrow Play - Verse 58

Backhand cover enabling deceptive narrow play actions

Translation

This technique is a defensive cover performed with the backhand (false-edge or reverse-grip action). It is specifically designed to enable highly deceptive plays in the narrow play (zogo stretto) phase of combat. The cover creates opportunities for counter-attacks through misdirection, likely using the false edge to deflect or bind the opponent's blade while concealing your true intention.

Fiore's Words

I am the cover of the backhand blade, for plays of greatest deception I am made. In narrow measure where the wise men fight, My false edge hides what strikes with might.

Combat Context

Applied in narrow play (zogo stretto) when blades are crossed or in close measure. The backhand cover creates tactical confusion, leading the opponent to believe you are purely defensive while you prepare a counterattack, disarm, or grapple. The deceptive nature suggests this is used when the opponent is pressing an advantage and expects a retreat or weak defence.

Training Notes

  • Practice the backhand cover with both true backhand grip rotation and false-edge deflections to understand both possible interpretations
  • Focus on making the cover appear defensive while preparing an immediate counter-action
  • In narrow play, emphasise minimal blade movement to maximise deception
  • Train entries from this cover into locks, disarms, or grappling techniques typical of zogo stretto
  • The 'greatest deceptiveness' suggests this cover should look weaker or more defensive than it actually is
