guard FL05 2/5

Strong Guard

Guards 4/6 - Verse 5

Half-sword guard against close-range armored threats

Translation

This is a strong defensive stance used when armoured, effective against swords, axes, and daggers. Grip your sword with the left hand at the middle of the blade (half-swording). This grip configuration is especially important for defence against the dagger, which poses the greatest threat at close range among these weapons when you are armoured.

Fiore's Words

I am a good guard against swords, axes, and daggers when armed in steel. I hold my blade at the middle with my left hand, and I do this especially against the dagger, for at close quarters, it can harm me worse than the other arms.

Combat Context

Armoured combat at close range, where the opponent may use a sword, axe, or dagger. The half-sword grip provides superior control and defence when an opponent attempts to close to grappling distance, particularly against dagger attacks, which can target gaps in armour. This guard is designed for close-quarters engagement, where standard longsword guards would be less effective.

Training Notes

  • The left hand grips the blade in the middle.
  • This is a half-swording position: right hand on the grip, left hand on the blade for leverage and control.
  • The stance provides strong defence and blade control at close range, where armoured opponents can grapple.
  • Practice transitioning into this guard when an opponent closes distance with a dagger drawn.
  • The blade in the left hand allows for powerful thrusts and precise point control while maintaining defensive coverage.

English - Colin Hatcher / Michael Chidester

I am a good guard against sword, axe and dagger if I am armored, because I grip the sword with my left hand at the middle. And this is particularly useful against the dagger, which can do more harm to me at close range than the other weapons.
