Rebuilding the Quintain After Eleven Years

The quintain lasted eleven years before it needed replacing. For jousting training equipment that gets hit with a lance at speed, repeatedly, in all weathers, that is a decent run.

What a quintain is

A target on a pivot. Ride at it with a lance, hit the target, it spins. If you are too slow, the counterweight hits you. Teaches accuracy, timing, and riding through the target.

The original

Heavy timber. Vertical post, horizontal arm on a pivot bearing, shield target, weighted bag. The pivot was the critical component. It survived eleven English winters. The timber rotted at the base. The bearing was still fine.

The replacement

Same design, improved details. Better ground contact. Better bearing. Heavier counterweight because the riders have improved.

Why I am writing about this

"Build a thing, use it for eleven years, then build a better version" is the entire philosophy of this brand in one object.
