Wide Play - Verse 28

Thrust to face from right crossing, or switch left for cut

Translation

After crossing swords on the right side, I have thrust my point into his face (or throat), exactly as the previous Master described. Alternatively, I could have performed the technique he mentioned: immediately after the crossing on the right, I could have switched my sword to the left and delivered a descending cut (fendente) to his head or arms.

Fiore's Words

I've thrust my point into your face, just as my Master before me said. I could have done his other play instead: When our swords crossed right, I'd switch left in a flash and send a fendente to your head or arms with all my might.

Combat Context

After successfully crossing swords with your opponent on the right side (likely from a right-side guard engagement), you find yourself in a position to either exploit an immediate opening with a thrust to the face, or to change angle by switching to the left and delivering a descending cut. This represents a tactical choice point based on the opponent's defensive posture and available openings after the crossing.

Training Notes

  • This is a decision-point technique: after crossing on your right, you can either thrust immediately or switch to a cut from the left.
  • The thrust should be executed 'subito' (immediately). Timing is critical before the opponent recovers from the crossing.
  • For the alternative, the switch from right to left must be a single, continuous motion leading into the fendente. Practice the transition without telegraph.
  • Target the head and arms with the descending cut, suggesting the opponent may raise hands to defend against the expected thrust.
  • This technique demonstrates reading the opponent's position after the crossing to choose between a thrust (if the opening remains) and a cut (if switching angles).
